Vasl is an artist-led initiative that brings together local and international artists for periods of intense exchange through residencies, workshops, public events and outreach activities. Though largely based Karachi, Vasl activities extend across Pakistan, with residencies and events also taking place in Lahore and Islamabad. Vasl is the first art organization of its kind in Pakistan. It has sowed the seeds to create an ever widening and engaging structure for collaboration, exchange and artistic support within the country. Countless artists have found the space to experiment on their practice at Vasl – advancing their professional careers and contributing to the organization with their energy, insight and manpower. Vasl has contributed immensely to the local art scene, introducing local residency projects to Pakistan, while also hosting international residencies for artists across the world. International residencies have provided numerous opportunities for mutual interactions and dialogues between Pakistani and foreign artists.
Vasl also holds teaching residencies, art shares, art studies and public art projects. Its website has the largest open access database of Pakistani artists available, with the database featuring images, artist statements and CV’s. The database hosts profiles for artists who have engaged in Vasl activities, for contemporary artists working within Pakistan, for Pakistani Masters, and for artists now working in the Diaspora.
